About SpecialSoul & Salman:
Salman Wadiwala was a 20 year old SpecialSoul with Down Syndrome. He left for his heavenly abode on 23rd April 2015. SpecialSoul is an awareness Blog about Kids with Down Syndrome. Salman was only going to be alive for 6 days, according to the doctor. Through this Blog, his sisters Alina & Sana are trying to reach to those people who have differently-abled kids, but are not sure of their social behavior or social Interaction of these kids. The blog will guide you through Salman’s journey about how normal and fantastic was his life.
This is what his sister Alina told Humans of Bombay – “My brother has Down’s syndrome, but in his head he’s as normal as everyone else- It’s society’s reaction towards him or some of the things he does which makes him believe otherwise. If he meets you, he’ll become your friend and hug you, express his love for you; but so many people have frowned upon that. I don’t know when people will understand that he’s ‘special’ not ‘retarded’. Just the other day we were at our gym and he was working out like any of us, but because he dropped something this woman turned around and said ‘who let this mad man into the gym?’ He had absolutely no reaction until my sister and I fought with that woman. That’s when he started crying because he thought he had gotten us into trouble. That’s the kind of person he is – he loves selflessly without expecting anything in return. His happiness doesn’t depend on anything materialistic but only on the love he gets and returns 10 folds and that’s something us ‘normal’ people can definitely learn from him.”
About Down Syndrome:
In every cell in the human body there is a nucleus, where genetic material is stored in genes. Genes carry the codes responsible for all of our inherited traits and are grouped along rod-like structures called chromosomes. Typically, the nucleus of each cell contains 23 pairs of chromosomes, half of which are inherited from each parent. Down syndrome occurs when an individual has a full or partial extra copy of chromosome 21.
This additional genetic material alters the course of development and causes the characteristics associated with Down syndrome. A few of the common physical traits of Down syndrome are low muscle tone, small stature, an upward slant to the eyes, and a single deep crease across the center of the palm – although each person with Down syndrome is a unique individual and may possess these characteristics to different degrees, or not at all.
Salman, may you rest in peace. Thank you for being so awesome. You are a true inspiration!
