The Modi government completes one year and seven months with the end of the year 2015. The year brought a mixed bag of events for the Modi government. Before we bid adieu to 2015, let’s see few achievements of the government under Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi’s reign.
1} India’s economy growth likely picked-up at 7.3 per cent in the second quarter of the current financial year (April 2015 – March 2016). India jumped twelve positions to 130th rank in the World Bank’s ‘Ease of Doing Business Index’. The Foreign Direct Investments (FDI) by the country also increased by huge percentages.
2} In June, Bangladesh and India signed ratification pact to operationalise the ‘Land Boundary Agreement’. This agreement was sealed in order to settle the forty one year old land boundary dispute through exchange of territories. This historic deal allowed thousands of people to choose their nationality after decades of statelessness.
3} PM Narengra Modi announced the ‘Start-up India’ initiative during his second Independence Day speech on August 15. The action plan on ‘Start-up India’ is said to be unveiled on January 16, 2016. This initiative is taken to boost entrepreneurship and job creation. The PM said, each of the 1.25 lakh bank branches should fund at least one ‘Dalit’ or ‘Adivasi’ entrepreneur and at least one woman entrepreneur. PM Modi said,
We are looking at systems for enabling start-ups. We must be number one in start-ups… ‘Start-up India’; Stand up India.
4} In the beginning of 2015, the Modi government replaced Planning Commission with a new institution named ‘NITI Aayog’ (National Institute for Transforming India). The institution is established to serve as ‘Think-Tank’ to provide governments at Centre and State levels with relevant strategic and technical advice across the spectrum of key elements of policy.
5} On December 31, 2015, PM Modi laid foundation stone of Delhi-Meerat Expressway. This expressway is aimed at easing traffic congestion in the National Capital of India, New Delhi.
6} The Modi government approved signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between Urban Development Ministry and Bloomberg Philanthropies in order to support development of the ‘Smart City’ initiative.
7} The first International Yoga Day was observed worldwide on June 21, 2015 and hence will be celebrated annually on the same day.
8} India signed a number of agreements with other nations in order to boost different sectors of the Indian economy.
