1941: World War II- A formal treaty of alliance is signed between Thailand and Japan.
1952: Saifuddin Kitchlu receives the Lenin Peace Prize of USSR Award. He was the first Indian to receive this award.
1968: Apollo 8 departs from moon’s orbit.
1972: East and West Germany establish diplomatic ties after almost two decades of Cold War.
1988: Pan Am Flight 103 from London to New York explodes midair over Lockerbie, Scotland killing all 243 passengers, 16 crew members and 11 residents on ground.
1995: The city of Bethlehem passes from Israeli to Palestinian control.
1998: The Viswabharati University in Calcutta (now Kolkata) presents the ‘Deshikottama’ award to Nobel Laureate Professor Amartya Sen.

Kisan Diwas is observed on December 23 in India to celebrate the birthday of Chaudhary Charan Singh, the Prime Minister of Republic of India from 1979 to 1980.
1913: The US Congress passed the Federal Reserve Act establishing the Federal Reserve System to serve as the nation’s central bank.
1919: Great Britain institutes a new Constitution for India.
1947: The transistor was invented by John Bardeen, Walter Brattain and William Shockley at Bell Laboratories. They shared the Nobel Prize for their invention.
1964: India and Ceylon hit by cyclone, about 4,850 killed.
2000: The Central Government of India gives a green signal to West bengal Government’s proposal to rename Calcutta as Kolkata.
1986: Dick Rutan and Jeana Yeager set a new world record of 216 hours of continuous flight around the world without refuelling. Their aircraft Voyager traveled 24,986 miles at a speed of about 115 miles per hour.

1814: The Treaty of Ghent is signed ending the War of 1812.
The War of 1812 was a military conflict between the United States of America and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, its North American colonies and its Native American allies. The war lasted for two and a half years.
1894: The first medical conference was held in Calcutta (now Kolkata), India.
1906: Reginald Fessenden transmits the first radio broadcast consisting of a poetry reading, a violin solo and a speech.
1921: Rabindranath Tagore established ‘Visva Bharati’ at Santiniketan, West Bengal.
1924: Albania becomes a republic.
1951: Libya becomes independent from Italy. Idris I is proclaimed King of Libya.
1968: The crew of Apollo 8 enters into orbit around the Moon, becoming the first humans to do so.
1969: The oil company Philips Petroleum made the first oil discovery in the Norwegian sector of North Sea.
1973: District of Columbia Home Rule Act is passed. This act allowed residents of Washington DC to elect their own local government.
1974: Cyclone Tracy devastates Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia. The cyclone destroyed more than 70 per cent of the city’s buildings.
1999: Indian Airlines Flight 814 hijacked in Indian airspace between Kathmandu, Nepal and Delhi. The aircraft eventually landed at Kandahar, Afghanistan. The ordeal ended on December 31 with the release of 190 survivors.
2000: Viswanathan Anand becomes the first Asian to win a world chess title in the world chess championship in Tehran (city in Iran).

1805: Austria ans France sign Treaty of Pressburg. The Treaty was signed as a consequence of the French victories over the Austrians at Ulm and Austerlitz.
1862: American Civil War- The Battle of Chickasaw Bayou, also called the Battle of Walnut Hills started.
1953: The United States announces the withdrawal of two divisions from Korea.
1976: The Communist Party of Nepal was founded.
1986: The Consumer Rights Act was passed in India.
1991: The Supreme Soviet of the Soviet Union formally dissolved the Soviet Union.
2004: Around 2,30,000 people lost lives and 1.5 million were left homeless after a 9.3 magnitude earthquake on the seafloor of Indian Ocean set off a series of giant tsunami waves that smashed into the shorelines of countries like Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Somalia.

1950: The United States and Spain resume relations for the first time since the Spanish Civil War of the 1930s.
